Lubbock, Texas – In their final event of regular season play, the New Mexico Lobos finished in eighth place after shooting a 301 (+13) in round three of the Red Raider Invitational. The Lobos carded a total team score of 894 (+30) on the weekend (300-293-301).
“The wind was blowing from the start today and we had overnight rain come through until this morning,” said Lobo head coach Jill Trujillo. “The team battled it out on the course all day as the wind kept picking up.”
“We had a great round going for majority of the day,” Trujillo added. “A few late bogeys came down the stretch as we finished on some really tough holes into the wind.”
Moving up three spots to take the team medal was tournament host, No. 26 Texas Tech, after shooting an 867 (+3) over three rounds of competition. Thirteen strokes behind was Purdue who finished with a total team score of 880 (+16). The University of Kansas finished in third with a score of 881 (+17) followed by Kansas State at 889 (+25). No. 25 BYU and Iowa ended tied for fifth place after carding identical team scores of 890 (+26).
Yupaporn Kawinpakorn of the University of Kansas was the individual medalist with a three-round total score of 209 (-7). One stroke behind was Texas Tech’s Sarah Brown who carded a 210 (-6) on the weekend. Finishing in third was Purdue’s Anna Appert Lund at 214 (-2). The top three finishers were the only competitors to finish under par.
Leading the Lobos was Ingrid Gutierrez who finished tied for 13th after a six-over performance at the windy event. Gutierrez carded a 222 (75-71-76) over the three rounds of play which included seven birdies. Manon Molle finished tied for 18th place with a total score of 223 (+7) after carding a 77-72-74 over the three rounds of competition. Eva Saulnier finished tied for 23rd at eight-over (224) and Alexandra Moisand finished tied for 27th with a nine-over performance (225).
“Ingrid finished strong for us after bogeying her first 3 holes and Eva added a couple birdies on her last nine holes too,” coach Trujillo commented.
“We had some good things come out of our players this week having played two events back to back. We know what we need to work on before leaving for conference in a week and keep this positive momentum moving forward.”
Next up, the Lobos travel to Palm Springs, Calif. for the Mountain West Championships on Apr. 18th – 20th.
