Softball Drops Game Two of Nevada Series 4-0

RENO, Nev. – The University of New Mexico softball team dropped game two of the three-game series to Nevada 4-0 Saturday afternoon at Hixson Park.
The Lobos struggled to get consistent offense going as they only pounded out four hits on the day and left five on base for the game.

Freshman Brooke Breland led the Lobos at the plate, going 2-for-3. Her first hit came in the third inning as she led off with an infield single. Her second came in the fifth with two outs, a single to left field.

Sophomore Chelsea Johnson had one of the other hits, the first hit of the game for the Lobos, an infield single to second in the second inning. The other Lobo hit came in the sixth from junior Jasmine Casados. She single through the right side to advance freshman Cheyenne Smith to second.

Nevada took advantage of two pitches from sophomore pitcher Krissy Fortner. Nevada’s sophomore Jennifer Purcell took one deep in the fourth inning to give the Wolf Pack a 2-0 lead. She did the same again in the sixth, taking one deep to right field, extending their lead to 4-0.

Fortner took the loss in the circle, dropping to 3-2 on the season. She allowed four runs off seven hits while walking one and striking out one in six innings of work.

The Lobos drop to 17-14 on the season and 2-3 in the Mountain West. Nevada is now 25-7 on the season and 6-2 in the conference play. The two teams will meet for the final game of the three-game series tomorrow at 1 p.m. MT. Live stats and a live stream of the game will be available on GoLobos.com.
