Afternoon Rally Moves Lobos Into Third

SAN DIEGO, Calif. –
After Day one of the Lamkin San Diego Classic, the University of New Mexico men’s golf team sits alone in third place at even-par 576 (291-285).
 
The Lobos were once again led by the efforts of Gustavo Morantes, who posted a 1-under 143 (71-72) after the opening 36 holes today. After today’s opening performance Morantes is currently tied for fifth.
 
Samuel Kim also finds himself inside the tournament’s top-10 performers after posting an even-par 144 through the first 36. Kim struggled closing his opening round, finishing a 3-over 39 that included a double-bogey. However, Kim was able to recover nicely, firing a 3-under 33 to close the afternoon.
 
Meanwhile, Andre Garcia was able to finally display consistency throughout the day, posting a pair of 73’s to finish at 2-over 146. An opening eagle on his second 18 put Garcia well on his way to eventually finishing tied for 15th at day’s end.
 
Andre Garcia showed the most improvement on the day, recovering to post a 1-under 71 in his afternoon round, after opening with a 7-over 79.
 
On the day, UNM had 28 total birdies, accompanied by two eagles and 112 pars. Overall, the Lobos lead the field in par-3 scoring, carrying a scoring average of 3.08. Individually, Sean Carlon was second in the field in par-3 scoring overall, with an average for the day of 2.88, while Gustavo Morantes was also second in par-4 scoring.
 
As for the rest of the field, Texas is currently tied with Arizona State at 2-under 574 to lead the tournament. Both teams have three separate top-15 performers on either squad.
 
Beau Hossler is in the lead after posting a 5-under 139. Hossler is looking to be crowned champion of the third consecutive tournament that he’s competed in, with the previous two being the John A. Burns and Arizona Intercollegiates. Hossler is currently ranked 5th in the World Amateur Golf Rankings.
 
The Lobos are set to tee off tomorrow at 9:30 a.m. PST.
