ALBUQUERQUE, NM – The University of New Mexico Lobos are headed to San Antonio in order to compete in the 2016 installment of the Lone Star Invitational hosted by the University of Texas at San Antonio.
The setup for this year’s competition is shotgun starts at 8:30 a.m. both days, with a challenging 36 holes scheduled for Monday and the final 18 slated for Tuesday.
The tournament will be held at Briggs Ranch Golf Club and is set to play at 7,247 yards and par 72.
Last year’s champion, Texas Tech, set an all-time scoring record at 29-under 835 and is not in this year’s tournament field which includes; the host UTSA Roadrunners, Bowling Green, Cincinnati, Houston Baptist, Little Rock, Louisiana-Lafayette, McNeese State, Miami (Ohio), Mississippi State, New Mexico, New Mexico State, North Texas, Ohio State, Rice, Southeastern La., Texas State and the UTEP Miners.
The Lone Star Invitational has treated the Lobos kindly, with two team championships coming in 2011 (3-under 861) and 2014 (16-under 848). Gavin Green also earned the individual medalist honor in 2014 with a 6-under 210.
Some other notable feats for UNM and it’s players at the Lone Star Invitational include the second lowest team round in tournament history (14-under 274) and the lowest all-time individual round which was a 8-under 64 posted by Jon Catlin in 2011’s opening round.
Briggs Ranch Golf Club is a Tom Fazio signature course, widely regarded as one of the top public courses in Texas. GolfWeek named Briggs Ranch as the top residential course in the state and the sixth ranked best residential course in the U.S.
