ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — Vice President of Athletics Paul Krebs has announced that women’s basketball coach Yvonne Sanchez has been relieved of her duties, effective immediately.

“This decision was made after a lot of careful consideration and a variety of factors.  We appreciate what Yvonne has brought to our basketball program over her time at New Mexico,” said Krebs.  “I believe with our facilities, our fan base and with our commitment to supporting women’s basketball, I’m confident that we can hire a coach that can return us to a championship level.”

Sanchez just completed her fifth season as the head coach at The University of New Mexico, going 17-15 and losing in the first round of the WBI to Weber State.  Sanchez, who served as the assistant and associate head coach for Don Flanagan at UNM for 11 seasons, ends her UNM career with a record of 77-81 overall and 40-44 in the Mountain West.  New Mexico finished as high as second place in 2015, but that was UNM’s only winning mark in five Mountain West seasons.

Sanchez was named UNM’s fifth head coach on April 22, 2011.  Krebs has stated that the national search for UNM’s sixth head coach for women’s basketball will begin immediately.
