SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – After three rounds of stiff competition, the Lobo women’s golf team finished the Bruin Wave Invitational in sixth place overall in a field of 16 teams. The Lobos had a three round total score of 898 (+34) after shooting a 299 (+11) in round three.
“We had a good showing here,” said Lobo head coach Jill Trujillo. “We kept our calm pretty well and I’m excited for the future.”
Taking home the team medal was tournament host, No. 6 UCLA, with a team total score of 868 (+4). Following the Bruins were Arizona State (+18) in second place, Cal (+24) in third, and San Diego State and Oklahoma State tied for fourth at +25.
The Lobos edged out two top ranked teams with No. 11 Stanford finishing in seventh with a score of +39 and No. 9 Washington finishing in eight with a score of +49.
“It was a tough course today,” said Trujillo. “The wind started blowing and there were some pretty tough hole locations, but we came through it pretty well.”
UCLA’s Louise Ridderstrom took home the individual medal with a three-round total score of 213 (-3). Leading the Lobos was Manon Molle’ and Ingrid Gutierrez who both finished tied for 12th place after carding a three-round total score of 220 (+4).
“I had a really good day putting today which helped a lot,” said Molle’. “The wind started around holes 13 and 14 and the course was really hard to play.”
The Lobos combined to have 26 birdies throughout the three rounds of play, five of which came from Molle’ and eight added by Gutierrez.
“I think we should continue to practice our short game, especially putting between four and six feet,” Molle’ added.
Coach Trujillo attributed the team’s success to a calm demeanor on the course, but admitted that some work still needed to be done in the Lobo’s mental game.
“One of the main things we need to work on is keeping our emotion out of it and moving on from shots that aren’t to our liking,” Trujillo confessed. “I think there is going to be no stopping this team once we can wrangle that.”
Next up, the Lobos will travel to Tuscan, Ariz. for the Arizona Wildcat Invitational on March 14th and 15th.
