UNM Looks to Bounce Back with Utah State

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – The University of New Mexico women’s basketball team will look bounce back after a three-game losing streak by hosting Utah State Wednesday in WisePies Arena at 7 p.m. MT. The game will be available on the Mountain West Network.

About The Matchup:
The Lobos will look to get back on the winning track with their first matchup as they take on Utah State for the second time in conference action. This will be the 19th matchup between the Lobos and the Aggies. The Lobos lead the all-time series 12-6 and lead the series in WisePies Arena 6-2 but they did lose the last contest with Utah State on the road, falling 72-56 to the Aggies. Under head coach Yvonne Sanchez, the Lobos are 2-4.
 
About New Mexico:
New Mexico is coming off its third straight loss, falling short to San Diego State last Saturday 51-46. The Lobos haven’t shot well in the last couple of games, shooting 38 percent on the season from the field and 28 percent from the three. In conference, they are shooting 35 percent from the field and 27 percent from the three. They are averaging 57.5 ppg in conference action and holding their opponents to 58.6 ppg.
 
Sophomore Cherise Beynon continues to lead the Lobos in conference play, averaging 14.1 ppg. She is second on the team in rebounds at 5.8. Senior Khadijah Shumpert is the only other Lobo averaging double figures at 12.9 ppg in conference play. She leads the squad with 6.2 rpg in conference action. Freshman Jaisa Nunn has stepped up for the Lobos in the last two games, scoring 14 against UNLV last week and 10 against San Diego State on Saturday.
 
About Utah State:
Utah State is currently 11-11 on the season and is tied for fourth with UNLV in the Mountain West with a 6-5 record. The Aggies are coming off a 84-75 loss to Wyoming on Saturday. They have won three out of the last four games, falling to Boise State in a close 63-58 matchup. On the season, they are shooting 41 percent from the field which ranks third in the MW. From the three, they are shooting 29 percent. They are averaging 69 ppg and holding their opponents to 67.8 ppg.
 
Sophomore guard Funda Nakkasoglu is leading the squad with 21.5 ppg and finished with 32 points against Wyoming last Saturday. She was 9-19 from the field and 12-12 from the free throw line. She is shooting 42 percent from the field and 34 percent from the three-point line. She also averages 4.5 assists per game. Last time the Lobos face the Aggies, Nakkasoglu finished with 17 points. She was 5-for-10 from the field and 7-for-8 from the free throw line. Freshman guard Rachel Brewster is second on the team with 9.4 ppg. She is shooting 35 percent from the field and 28 percent from the free throw line.
 
About the Coaches:
Yvonne Sanchez is in her fifth season as head coach of the Lobos. This is her 16th year with the program. Sanchez holds a 71-76 record as head coach and is currently 11-10 on the season and is seventh in Mountain West action with a 4-6 record.
 
Jerry Finkbeiner is in his fourth season with the Aggies and owns a 52-64 record at Utah State. He is currently 11-11 overall this season and tied for fourth in the MW with a 6-5 record.
