ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – The University of New Mexico women’s basketball team will look to get back on the winning track by hosting San Diego State Saturday in WisePies Arena at 2 p.m. MT. The game will be available to watch on the Mountain West Network.
About The Matchup:
The Lobos will look to get back on the winning track with their first matchup this season with San Diego State Saturday in WisePies Arena at 2 p.m. This will be the 57th matchup between the two teams. UNM leads the all-time series 31-25. The Lobos have won the last four games and are 13-10 in WisePies Arena. Under Yvonne Sanchez the Lobos are 4-7. Since Sanchez has been a part of the Lobo program, the Lobos are 26-13.
About New Mexico:
New Mexico is coming off its second straight loss, falling to UNLV Wednesday night in Las Vegas, Nev. 57-48. The Lobos will look to get back on track with San Diego State, who is currently 10th in the conference with a 1-9 record. Freshman Jaisa Nunn led the Lobos against the Rebels with a career-tying 14 points. She also had a team-high nine rebounds. Sophomore Cherise Beynon was second on the team with 11 points, her ninth straight game in double figures. Senior Khadijah Shumpert was the only other Lobo in double figures, scoring 10.
On the season, the Lobos are averaging 63.2 ppg and holding their opponents to 59.8 ppg. They are shooting 38 percent from the field and 29 percent from the three. Shumpert leads all scorers at 14.1 ppg and has a team-high of 6.6 rpg. Beynon is second the squad at 12.1 ppg but leads the team in conference action at 14.2 ppg.
About San Diego State:
The Aztecs are currently 6-15 on the season and 10th in the Mountain West with a 1-9 record. They are coming off a 70-54 loss to Colorado State, who is along at the top of the Mountain West. Their only Mountain West win came in their conference opener against Wyoming Dec. 30, claiming a 84-77 win over the Cowgirls. They are averaging 57.9 ppg but are giving up 65.0 ppg. They are shooting 37 percent from the field, 28 percent from the three-point line and 64 percent from the free throw line.
Sophomore guard McKynzie Fort is leading the Aztecs with 14.1 ppg. She is shooting 46 percent from the field and averages 4.0 rpg. She is first on the team in steals at 2.0 per game. Senior guard Ahjalee Harvey is second on the squad in points, averaging 8.6 per game. She is shooting 37 percent from the field and 35 percent from the three-point line.
About the Coaches:
Yvonne Sanchez is in her fifth season as head coach of the Lobos. This is her 16th year with the program. Sanchez holds a 71-75 record as head coach and is currently 11-9 on the season and is in Mountain West action with a 4-5 record.
Stacie Terry is in her third season with the Aztecs. She owns a 31-51 career record at SDSU and it currently 6-15 on the season and 1-9 in the Mountain West.
