SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – After two rounds of play, the New Mexico Lobos currently sit in seventh place at the Bruin Wave Invitational with a total score of 599 (+23). The Lobos carded a team total 302 (+14) in the first round of play and improved to 297 (+9) in round two.
“Pretty solid day overall,” said Lobo head coach, Jill Trujillo. “We had it going pretty well but there were a few little mistakes at the end of our second round.”
Leading the team competition is tournament host, UCLA, with a par-even two round team score of 576. The No. 6 ranked Bruins have a 10 stroke advantage over Arizona State who finished in second place after carding a team score of 586 (+10). San Diego State finished in third place with a score of 589 (+13). Trailing the Aztecs is Oklahoma State in fourth (+15) and Cal in fifth (+17).
The story of the day was sophomore, Ingrid Gutierrez, who finished in a three-way tie for second place with a two-round total score of 142 (-2) . UCLA’s Lilia Vu leads by one stroke with a total score of 141 (-3).
“Ingrid kept her cool all day and played steady,” said Trujillo.
In round one Gutierrez carded a 69 (-3) which put her in a three way tie for first place. Gutierrez shot a 73 (+1) in round two to secure a second place finish on the day. Gutierrez sank six birdies on the day.
“I had a lot of fun,” said Gutierrez. “I was just thinking about every shot and not the scores. Tomorrow I’m going to do the same thing and hope I play well.”
“Tomorrow our main goal is to conquer the par 5s,” Trujillo commented. “We didn’t play them very well and that is where all the scoring is happening. Tomorrow we hope to move up the ladder.”
The Lobos will tee off for round three Tuesday, (3/1) at 7:30 a.m.
