ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – In case you missed it, former University of New Mexico All-Conference performer and first-round MLS SuperDraft pick Blake Smith signed with Miami FC of the NASL in December. Smith, who was the eighth overall pick of the 2013 SuperDraft by the Montreal Impact, most recently played for Yverdon Sport FC in Switzerland’s 1. Liga Promotion.
The Boerne, Texas, native appeared in 70 games with 53 starts for the Lobos from 2009-12. He scored 13 goals and assisted on 19 others during his time for UNM, and he finished second in the nation in assists with 13 in 2012. A 2011 NSCAA Scholar All-American, Smith was named First Team All-MPSF in both 2011 and 2012.
“I’m excited to have … Blake Smith be a part of the team,” Miami FC head coach Alessandro Nesta said in a statement on the team’s website. “We are assembling a high-caliber group of players who will make Miami FC a team to watch.”
He made 16 appearances for the Impact during his rookie season before being loaned to the Indy Eleven of the NASL in 2014. He played in 14 games for Yverdon-Sport last season and scored four goals. Miami FC begins its inaugural season on April 2 against the Fort Lauderdale Strikers.
