COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – University of New Mexico junior Chris DeVito was named the Mountain West Player of the Week after a monster performance in four games for the Lobos. The Northridge, California, native hit .562 (9-for-16) with seven runs scored and nine RBIs as UNM went 4-0 last week. He had four extra-base hits, including his first career grand slam, and drove in a career-high seven RBIs in the Lobos’ 17-7 win over Wichita State on Friday.
DeVito’s week began as the starting catcher in the Lobos’ 7-1 win over Hawai’i on Monday that clinched UNM’s first series win on Oahu since 1985. He went 1-for-4 with a double and a run scored while making three putouts behind the plate.
Friday night was perhaps the best game of DeVito’s career thus far. Starting as the DH, he went 5-for-5, which was a career-best in hits, with three runs, a double and the grand slam. On Saturday he doubled leading off the fifth inning and eventually came around to score UNM’s first run as part of a 1-for-3 performance. He also drew a bases-loaded walk later in the game to drive in a run. In the series finale on Sunday, he went 2-for-4 with two runs and an RBI. For the week he posted a .588 on-base percentage and a .938 slugging percentage.
This is the first weekly honor of DeVito’s career and the first for a Lobo this season.
