Lobos Look for Momentum at SDSU

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – The University of New Mexico women’s basketball team is looking for some winning momentum for the Mountain West tournament as it takes on San Diego State Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. MT.

ABOUT THE MATCHUP:
The Lobos will look for some momentum for the Mountain West tournament, as they take on San Diego State Tuesday on the road at 7:30 p.m. MT. This will be the 58th matchup between the two teams. UNM leads the all-time series 31-26, but fell in the last meeting 51-46 in WisePies Arena. The series is tied 11-11 in San Diego. Under Yvonne Sanchez, the Lobos are 4-8. Since Sanchez has been a part of the Lobo program, the Lobos are 26-14.
 
ABOUT NEW MEXICO:
The Lobos come into the game with a 14-13 overall record and are sitting tied for sixth in the Mountain West conference with a 7-9 record. They are to build some momentum heading in to the conference tournament next weekend.
 
The Lobos are coming off their second straight loss, falling to Fresno State 51-43. The Lobos had a late comeback that fell short to the Bulldogs. They scored 24 points in the fourth quarter but it wasn’t enough to claim the win. The Lobos were led by senior Khadijah Shumpert. She finished with a game-high 22 points, 10 of those coming in the first half of the Lobos’ 12 points. Sophomore Cherise Beynon finished with 12 points, all coming in the second half.
 
The Lobos have relied heavily on both Shumpert and Beynon. Against the Rams last Wednesday, Beynon went off for 23 and Shumpert finished with 13. On the season, Shumpert is leading the Lobos with 14.1 ppg while Beynon is averaging 12.5 ppg. In conference play, Beynon leads the team with 14 ppg while Shumpert is right behind with 13.8 ppg.
 
The Lobos are shooting 37 percent from the field and 28 percent from the three. They are averaging 61.4 ppg and holding their opponents to 58.2 ppg which is second among the conference.
 
ABOUT SAN DIEGO STATE:
San Diego State has picked up their play over the last month.  The Aztecs have won five out of their last seven that have come in February. They are coming off a 68-63 loss to Boise State last Saturday. They come into the matchup with a 11-16 overall record and is currently in eighth place in the MW with a 6-10 record.
 
The Aztecs are average 59.4 ppg and holding their opponents to 63.3 ppg. In the last meeting with the Lobos, they shot 44 percent from the field and 45 percent from the three. They relied on sophomore guard McKenzie Fort, who finished that game with 22 points. She was 9-for-14 from the field.
 
Fort leads the team in points, averaging 14.7 ppg. She is shooting 47 percent from the field and 70 percent from the free throw line.
               
Senior guard Ahjalee Harvey averages 9.8 ppg. She is shooting 40 percent from the field and 36 percent from the three. Senior Diedra Smith is third on the team in scoring at 7.0 ppg. She leads the team in rebounds at 4.8 rpg.
 
About the Coaches:
Yvonne Sanchez is in her fifth season as head coach of the Lobos. This is her 16th year with the program. Sanchez holds a 74-79 record as head coach and is currently 14-13 on the season. The Lobos are tied for sixth in the Mountain West with Utah State with a 7-9 record.
 
Stacie Terry is in her third season with San Diego State. With the Aztecs, she owns a 36-52 record. This season she is 11-16 on the season and 6-10 in the MW to sit in eighth place.
