LAWRENCE, KS—The University of New Mexico women’s tennis team played its first match in Kansas today against Wichita State team. The Lobos played hard and got on the board, but fell to the No. 21 ranked team.

In double’s play, Ludivine Burguiere and Rachana Bhat teamed up at the number three positon. Ruth Copas played with teammate Andrea Leblanc at the number two positon. Both teams fought Wichita State, but it wasn’t enough to get a win.

When the Shockers clinched the doubles point, Dominique Dulski and Emily Olivier were trailing one game to Wichita State as their match was left unfinished. They competed at the number one position.

In singles play, Olivier put a point on the board for New Mexico when she defeated Schiller at the number two position. She won 6-4, 6-3.

Sharon Coone and Burguiere both met similar fates. In Coone’s match at the number six positon, she lost the first set in a tiebreaker, but came back to dominate WSU’s Abby Stevens 6-0. In the third set tiebreaker, Coone fell.

Burguiere competed at the number four positon against Aleks Trifunovic and their match went three sets as well. She lost the first set 6-3, but came back in the second to win 7-5. Like her teammate, she fell in the third set tiebreaker.

The Lobos would not put up any more wins in singles play. Leblanc competed at the number one positon, Dulski the third and Copas the number five spot.

“Today was a great test for us,” said head coach Kelcy McKenna. “Wichita State played great tennis from start to finish. Tomorrow will be another opportunity for us to work on having great competitive energy from the start and maintain that competitiveness for the duration  of the match.”

The Lobos will stay in Lawrence to face No. 23 Kansas tomorrow.
