ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – The University of New Mexico women’s basketball will look to a key matchup with Fresno State for the second round Saturday at 3 p.m MT. The game will stream live on the Mountain West Network.
About The Matchup:
The Lobos will face Fresno State for the second time around Saturday on the road in Fresno, Calif. at 3 p.m. MT. This will be the 19th matchup between the two teams. The series is tied at 9-9 after a 69-65 double-overtime loss to Fresno State on Jan. 2. The Lobos are now 2-6 under head coach Yvonne Sanchez against the Bulldogs. The Lobos are 1-6 all-time in Fresno.
About New Mexico:
New Mexico is coming off a heartbreaking loss to Colorado State, 49-48. They are now tied for sixth in the Mountain West with Utah State at a 7-8 mark. Wednesday was a tough battle with the No. 25th-ranked CSU Rams but the Lobos held their own down the wire. With just 3.2 seconds left in the game, the ball was in the hands of senior Khadijah Shumpert but her shot rolled off the rim.
The Lobos will look to get back at Fresno State after a thriller in WisePies Arena on Jan. 2. The Lobos fell to the Bulldogs 69-65 in double-overtime. Shumpert went off for 23 points while Beynon finished with 17.
On the season, the Lobos are averaging 62.2 ppg and holding their opponents to 58.5 ppg. They are shooting 37 percent from the field and 28 percent from the three. Shumpert is leading the squad with 13.8 ppg and 6.3 rpg. Beynon is the only other Lobo averaging double-figures at 12.5 ppg.
In conference action only, Beynon leads the squad with 14.1 ppg and picks up 4.9 rpg. Shumpert is right behind with 13.2 ppg and leads the squad with 6.1 rpg. The Lobos are shooting 35 percent from the field in MW play and 28 percent from the three.
About Fresno State:
The Bulldogs come into the matchup with a 17-9 overall record and a 13-2 MW record to remain in second place. They have won their last four out of five games. They fell to San Diego State 65-54 in double overtime. They are recently coming off a 63-48 win over Air Force on Wednesday.
On the season, they are averaging 64.2 ppg and holding their opponents to 59.5 ppg. They are shooting 41 percent from the field and 30 percent from the three. The Bulldogs have three players scoring in double-figures. Sophomore center Bego Faz Davalos is leading the squad, averaging 12.2 ppg and 9.8 rpg. Senior forward Toni Smith is averaging 10.8 ppg while Shauqunna is putting together 10.7 ppg.
On Jan. 2, the Bulldogs and the Lobos played an exciting, thrilling game that ended in Fresno State’s favor after double-overtime. The Bulldogs finished that game with four players in double-figures, including Faz Davalos, Alex Furr, Smith and Moriah Faulk.
About the Coaches:
Yvonne Sanchez is in her fifth season as head coach of the Lobos. This is her 16th year with the program. Sanchez holds a 74-78 record as head coach and is currently 14-12 on the season. The Lobos are tied for sixth in the Mountain West with Utah State with a 7-8 record.
Jaime White is in her 10th season with the Bulldogs and owns a 156-147 career record at Fresno State. The Bulldogs remain in second place of the conference with a 13-2 record behind undefeated CSU. They are 16-9 overall.
