ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – The University of New Mexico women’s basketball will face its toughest test yet thus far this season as it takes on No. 25 ranked Colorado State Wednesday night in WisePies Arena at 7 p.m.

About The Matchup:
The Lobos will look for their third straight victory Wednesday as they take on Colorado State, who is undefeated in MW play thus far and has cracked the AP Poll, ranking in at No. 25. CSU is the first team in the MW to be ranked since 2010 and the first Colorado State team to be ranked since 2002.
This will be the 72nd meeting between the two teams. The Lobos lead 23-10 in WisePies Arena and they claimed a 67-40 win over the Rams in WisePies in their last meeting. Under head coach Yvonne Sanchez, the Lobos are 4-4. They are 24-11 since she has been a part of the Lobo program. CSU has only won once (Jan. 24, 2014) in WisePies Arena since 1998.
About New Mexico:
New Mexico is coming off its second straight win Saturday. They defeated Air Force 58-36 after a second quarter surge. The Lobos will look to be the first Mountain West team to defeat the No. 25 ranked Rams. In the last two games, the Lobos have shot over 40 percent, shooting 42 percent in the 70-60 key victory over Boise State and 44 percent against Air Force.
The Lobos are led by senior Khadijah Shumpert as she is averaging 13.9 ppg. Sophomore Cherise Beynon is right behind, averaging 12.1 ppg. But the Lobos have seen seniors Bryce Owens and Alexa Chavez step up in the last couple of games. Owens finished with a team-high 13 points in the win over Boise State while Chavez finished with a season-high nine points against Air Force.
In conference play, Beynon leads the team with 13.5 ppg while Shumpert is scoring 13.2 ppg. Beynon is shooting 41 percent from the three while Shumpert is shooting 44 percent from the field. As a team, the Lobos are shooting 35 percent from the field in conference and 28 percent from the three. They are averaging 59.6 ppg and holding their opponents to 57.9 ppg.
About Colorado State:
The Rams come into WisePies Arena with a 24-1 overall record and a undefeated mark of 14-0 in conference action. They received votes in last week’s polls. The only game they lost this season was at Penn on Nov. 24, falling 49-48. They have won 21 straight since then. The only teams that have come close to beating the Rams was SJSU on Jan. 27 and Wyoming last Saturday. The Rams beat the Spartans 80-78 and the Cowgirls 62-57.
The Rams are averaging 70.3 ppg which ranks second in the MW. They are shooting 45 percent from the field and 34 percent from the three. Senior forward Jamie Patrick is leading the squad with 12.7 ppg. She is shooting 48 percent from the field and 41 percent from the three. The Rams have three others scoring in double-digits, including senior Keyora Wharry (10.4) , junior guard Ellen Nystrom (10.9) and junior forward Elin Gustavsson (10.3). Colorado State holds their opponents to 51.9 ppg, a 33 percent shooting percentage from the field and a 26 percent shooting percentage from the three.
About the Coaches:
Yvonne Sanchez is in her fifth season as head coach of the Lobos. This is her 16th year with the program. Sanchez holds a 74-77 record as head coach and is currently 14-11 on the season and moved into fifth of the Mountain West with a 7-7 record.
Ryun Williams is in his fourth season with the Rams. He owns a 83-36 record at Colorado State and is currently at the top of the conference with an undefeated mark of 14-0. Overall, they are ranked No. 25 in the country which is the first time a MW teams has been ranked since 2010 and the first time Colorado State has been ranked since 2002.
