Lobos Head Out Into the Community

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — The University of New Mexico Lobo football team puts in plenty of hours on the field and in the classroom, but wearing the state name of “New Mexico” on your chest means more than the university … it represents the entire state, and of course our home here in Albuquerque.

Despite the rigors of life as a college student-athlete, our team knows the importance of community and with that in mind, many members of the team spent Friday night and Saturday taking part in a pair of community service projects.

Friday night members of the team headed down to Sagebrush Community Church to help with their Youth Weekend Kickoff, serving as greeters, taking pictures and helping kids get to their correct locations.  In all the Lobo student-athletes helped nearly 700 kids at the Youth Weekend Kickoff.

On Saturday morning, many of those same student-athletes came back and helped out at the Mayor’s Invitational Track Meet, the only indoor track meet for Special Olympians.  The Lobos served as timers, pit rakers, judges … just about anything that was needed.  They of course cheered on all the Special Olympians, who were racing on the same track that just two weeks prior saw many Summer Olympians such as LoLo Jones and Queen Harrison compete on.
