STANFORD, Calif. – The Lobo women’s golf team finished in fifth place at the Peg Barnard Invitational after shooting a 293 (+9) in the second round of play, three shots better than their round one total. After two rounds the Lobos tallied a total score of 589, 21-over par.
“It was a pretty good start to our spring season,” said Lobo head coach Jill Trujillo. “We need to work on some things before our next event in a couple weeks, but I think that our potential is good.”
Grasping the team medal was Washington with a two-day total of 571 (+3), shooting four-under on the day and cutting off 11 strokes from their round one total. Three strokes behind the Huskies was Stanford with a total score of 574 (+6). Cal finished third with a score of 5 (+9) and Oregon landed in fourth with a score of 583 (+15).
The fifth place finish is sweetened even more by head to head victories against three Mountain West teams competing in the event. Definitive wins against Fresno State, San José State, and Nevada is sure to boost the Lobo’s confidence as the conference tournament draws near.
Washington’s Wenyung Keh was the individual medalist after carding a five-under second round. Keh’s two-day total was 138 (-4). Washington and Stanford were the only schools to have individuals finish in the top five, with Washington claiming three spots and Stanford securing two top-five finishes.
Hanging on to the lead for the Lobos was Ingrid Gutierrez, carding a 73 (+2) in round two and a 144 (+2) on the weekend. Gutierrez finished tied for eighth place alongside Stanford’s Mariah Stackhouse and Oregon’s Marcella Pranovia. New Mexico’s Eva Saulnier moved into 15th place after carding a two-round total score of 147 (+5).
“The course played just as hard as yesterday, but today I knew how to play it,” said Saulnier. “I just tried to make as many pars as possible.”
Next, the Lobos will travel to San Luis Obispo, Calif. on Feb. 29th for the Bruin Wave Invitational hosted by UCLA and Pepperdine.
