STANFORD, Calif. – Earlier today the University of New Mexico women’s golf team finished their first competitive round of the spring semester with a seventh place performance at the Pat Barnard Invitational at the Stanford Golf Course. The Lobos shot 12-over par (296), 11 shots behind the leader.
“We had to shake a little rust off,” said Lobo head coach Jill Trujillo. “I saw a lot of good things out there.”
After 18 holes of play, Oregon sits atop the leaderboard with a score of 285, just one-over par. Close behind is tournament host, Stanford, at three-over (287) and Cal with five-over (289). Washington currently sits in fourth at seven-over (291) and Fresno State and Colorado are tied for fifth place with matching scores of 11-over (295).
“Most of our mistakes were short game issues,” Trujillo commented.
The individual competition is in a stalemate, with four players tied for the top spot with identical scores of one-under par (70). Among the leaders are Stanford’s Casey Danielson, Washington’s Ying Luo, and Oregon’s Caroline Inglis and Marcella Pranovia.
The Lobos are led by Ingrid Gutierrez who currently sits in a four-way tie for fifth place with a par-even score of 71. Gutierrez carded 16 pars and one birdie on the day.
“I was nice and steady making pars, but the birdie just didn’t come out,” said Gutierrez. “Tomorrow I’m going to play smart and conservative.”
Manon Molle’ currently sits tied for 21st with a first round card of three-over (74). Eva Saulnier finished the day at four-over (75) putting her tied for 30th place and Alexandra Moisand carded a 76 (five-over) placing her tied for 34th. Darian Zachek sits tied for 38th after shooting seven over on the day (78).
“I think the team played well today, but I know we can do better,” Gutierrez explained.
As a team, the Lobos carded nine birdies in the first round, with Molle’ and Saulnier each sinking three apiece. With fast greens and sunny California weather, the Lobos look for more success in round two of competition.
“I think this team can really take it low tomorrow,” said Trujillo.
The Lobos will tee off for the final round beginning at 8:00 AM (PT). For live stats visit www.birdiefire.com
