Lobos Upset No. 56 Denver

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M.—The University of New Mexico hosted its third home match of the season today and finished with an upset over No. 56 Denver.
 
In doubles play, Rachana Bhat and Ludivine Burguiere were first to finish their match after they topped Charlotte Derbyshire and Evy Van Genechten 6-1. The pair competed at the number three position.
 
Ruth Copas and Andrea Leblanc followed at the number two position when the fell a tough fought match to Denver’s Morgan Barnhill and Bianca Mok. The score was 6-2.
 
The doubles point came down to the match at the number one position. Emily Olivier paired up with Dominique Dulski for the first time this season to take on Denver’s Julia O’Loughlin and Maureen Slattery. The two teams went back and forth for the first couple points, but the Lobos pulled ahead and clinched their match and the doubles point when they won 6-4.
 
In singles play Olivier and Dulski both met the same fate against their opponents. They fell 6-0, 6-3 shortly after one another, bringing Denver up to 2 points. Shortly after, Burguiere topped Derbyshire 6-2, 6-3. She competed at the number four position.
 
The remaining three matches were battles. Leblanc, Copas and Bhat all went into tiebreakers for the first set of their matches.
 
Leblanc won her tiebreaker 8-6 in the first set. In the second, she fought back from a 4-1 game difference to tie the set 4-4. She continued with this momentum and won the set, clinching her match 7-6, 6-4.
 
Copas also played tough battling back from being down 4-1, but lost the tiebreaker. She fell in the second set 6-1, losing her match.
 
At this point, the match is tied 3-3 with one match left. Bhat was still playing against Barnhill and took her to a three set match. She won the first and lost the second. In the third set, she played with her team cheering her on, and won 6-4 clinching her match and the winning point for New Mexico.
 
 
The Lobos advance to 4-2 in the season and look forward to another home match next weekend as they take on Utah February 20 at 5 p.m.
