ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – After a close win Wednesday over Utah State, the University of New Mexico women’s basketball team will look to use that momentum as they head to San Josè State Saturday. Tipoff is set for 3 p.m. MT and will be available on the Mountain West Network.
About The Matchup:
The Lobos will look to continue their winning momentum this week as they head to San José State Saturday. This will be just the seventh matchup in all-time history between the two teams. The Lobos lead the all-time series 6-0, claiming their sixth straight win over the Spartans on Jan. 23 in WisePies Arena, 71-57. This will be the fifth matchup under head coach Yvonne Sanchez. She leads the series over third year Spartan coach Jaime Craighead 4-0.
About New Mexico:
New Mexico got back on the winning track, snapping a three-game losing streak with a 73-70 victory over Utah State on Wednesday. Sophomore Cherise Beynon finished with a career-high 24 points, shooting a career-high of 6-for-11 from the three, which is tied for third on the all-time list for made threes in a game. Seniors Khadijah Shumpert, Bryce Owens and Alexa Chavez all contributed in the win. Shumpert recorded 17 points, 11 of those coming from the free throw line. Owens finished with 12 points and eight assists while Chavez picked up a season-high seven rebounds and season-high six points.
The Lobos are shooting 37 percent from the field on the season and 28 percent from the three. They are averaging 62.8 ppg and holding their opponents to 59.8 ppg. Shumpert leads the squad with 14 ppg while Beynon is second at 12.5. In conference action Beynon is first on the squad with 15 ppg. She is shooting 41 percent from the three in MW play.
About SJSU:
San José State is currently 9-14 on the season and fourth in the Mountain West with a 7-5 record. They are coming off a 67-61 win over UNLV on Wednesday. Junior Dezz Ramos went off for 20 points, shooting 7-for-20 from the field. She also picked up eight assists and three steals. Senior Nyre Harris and junior Jasmine Smith finished with 11 points each. On the season, SJSU is leading the Mountain West with 73.7 ppg. They are shooting 39 percent from the field and 31 percent from the three.
Ramos is leading the squad with 19.0 ppg. She is shooting 42 percent from the field and 85 percent from the free throw line. She averages 3.9 assists per game. They are still missing Aniya Baker who is out to injury. She was averaging 12.0 ppg before she went out. Harris is averaging 9.5 ppg and Smith is right behind at 9.3. SJSU has won their last three games, giving Fresno State their first loss on Feb. 3 66-64.
About the Coaches:
Yvonne Sanchez is in her fifth season as head coach of the Lobos. This is her 16th year with the program. Sanchez holds a 72-76 record as head coach and is currently 12-10 on the season and has a Mountain West record of 5-6.
Jamie Craighead is in her third season with the Spartans and owns a 35-50 record at SJSU. They are currently 9-14 on the season and fourth in the Mountain West with a 7-5 record.
