ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – University of New Mexico men’s basketball student-athletes Cullen Neal and Tim Williams have received CoSIDA Academic All-District 7 honors, as announced Thursday.
The Academic All-District program recognizes the nation’s top student-athletes for their combined performances athletically and in the classroom. Both Neal and Williams will now be eligible for Academic All-America honors later this season.
Neal earned the honor with a 3.8 cumulative grade point average in his communications program. Neal currently averages 13.3 points per game and ranks third in the Mountain West Conference with four assists per game. His marquee game came at Fresno State, in which Neal scored 26 points on 50 percent shooting, leading to a 15 point road win.
Williams holds a 3.38 cumulative GPA as an economics major. Williams currently leads the MW in field goal percentage at 59.9 percent. He is in range of becoming just the third Lobo ever to finish a season shooting 60 percent on at least 300 shot attempts. Williams’ 17.5 points and 7.6 rebounds per game each rank fourth in the MW.
The MW earned three academic honors Thursday, with the Lobos taking two of them. Only five teams in all of NCAA Division I had multiple honorees. Prior to this season, the only Lobos to ever receive CoSIDA Academic All-District honors were Troy Devries and Roman Martinez.
