Lobos Face UNLV for Second Time

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – The University of New Mexico women’s basketball team will head to Las Vegas, Nev. to face UNLV Wednesday for the second go-around in conference action. Tipoff is scheduled for 8 p.m. MT and the game will be available on the Mountain West Network.

About The Matchup:
The Lobos will look for their second straight road win as they face UNLV in Las Vegas, Nev. Wednesday at 8 p.m. MT. This will be the 54th matchup between the two teams. UNLV leads the all-time series 30-23 and leads 21-8 in Las Vegas, Nev. The Lobos have won the last four out of five matchups, including the last one held in WisePies Arena, claiming a 67-53 win over the Lady Rebels. This will be the 12th matchup under head coach Yvonne Sanchez and her 35th since she becamse a part of the Lobo program.
 
About New Mexico:
New Mexico is coming off a tough 81-60 loss to Boise State last Saturday. The Lobos are now sixth in the Mountain West standings with a 4-4 record in conference action. They are 11-8 overall. They are averaging 63.9 ppg and 40.6 rpg. They are 2-2 on the road in conference but are looking to make it two straight as they claimed a 63-33 victory at Air Force last week. Khadijah Shumpert is leading the squad at 14.6 ppg. She finished with 23 points against Boise State last week. Freshman Emily Lines finished with a career-high 15 points against the Broncos and Cherise Beynon finished with 13 points, her eighth straight game in double-figures.
 
Beynon is second on the squad, averaging 12.1 ppg. She is shooting 32 percent from the field and 37 percent from the three. Shumpert is shooting 55 percent from the field and a team-best 77 percent from the free throw line. She also has a team-best of 6.5 rpg. For the Lobos, they are shooting 38 percent from the field and 29 percent from the three-point line. They are holding their opponents to 59.9 ppg with a scoring margin of +4.1.
 
About UNLV:
UNLV is currently in fourth place in the Mountain West. The Lady Rebels are 5-4 in conference acton and are tied with Utah State. Overall, they are 12-8. Sophomore guard Dakota Gonzalez is leading the team in scoring, averaging 13.8 ppg. Last time we face them, she had a team-high 16 points. The Lady Rebels are coming of a 55-41 victory over San Diego State last Saturday. They lost to Boise State last Wednesday 75-56. Before the BSU loss, they were on a three-game win streak with wins over Air Force, Utah State and Nevada.
 
On the season, they are averaging 61.3 ppg and holding their opponents to 57.2 ppg. They are shooting 35 percent from the field, 28 percent from the three and 64 percent from the free throw line. They have two others average double-figures, Brooke Johnson and Nikki Wheatley.
 
About the Coaches:
Yvonne Sanchez is in her fifth season as head coach of the Lobos. This is her 16th year with the program. Sanchez holds a 71-74 record as head coach and is currently 11-8 on the season and is fourth in Mountain West action with a 4-4 record. This will be the 12th matchup under Sanchez and her 35th as a part of the Lobo program.
 
Kathy Olivier is in her eighth season as head coach of the Lady Rebels. She owns a 110-129 overall record at UNLV and is currently 12-8 on the season and 5-4 in conference action.
