ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – The University of New Mexico women’s tennis team played Northern Arizona this afternoon after coming off a 7-0 win yesterday against Southern Illinois.
The duo of Ruth Copas and Andrea Leblanc came out swinging when they defeated NAU’s Hailey Rochin and Marta Lewandowski 6-1. The pair competed at the number two position.
At the number one positon, Emily Olivier and Ludivine Buguiere played Blanka Szavay and Hanneke Lodewijks. The two teams battled closely to tie five games before NAU won the next game 6-5. The Lobos played hard, but ended up falling to their opponent 7-5.
Almost immediately after the finish of the second match, Sharon Coone and Rachana Bhat secured the doubles point for New Mexico when they pulled ahead of Emelia Box and Jordan Denesik, winning 6-4.
Rachana Bhat was the first to finish in singles play when she defeated Emelia Box 6-1, 6-0 at the number six position. Shortly after her win, Olivier clinched another win for New Mexico when she defeated Szavay 6-0, 6-2 at the number two position.
Sharon Coone was next to finish. She clinched the match for the Lobos when she defeated Denesik 6-4, 6-3.
Andrea Leblanc, Ruth Copas and Ludivine Burguiere all were still battling Northern Arizona when Coone won the 4th point.
Burguiere was in her second set, coming off an exciting tiebreaker win against Rochin. She came from behind to tie the match 6-6 and then won the tiebreaker 7-1. She was leading 3-1 in her second set.
The Lobos are now undefeated with a 3-0 record. They hope to keep the momentum as they head to Minneapolis, MN, for the Courtside Classic. They will play Mississippi State first, then the winner of DePaul and Minnesota.
