TUCSON, Ariz. – Day two in the desert is over, and the University of New Mexico Men’s Golf team finished in fourth place overall at this year’s Arizona Intercollegiate.
The Lobos shot 4-under as a team today and finished the tournament at 4-over 856. UNM shot the second lowest team score today at 4-under 280, which trailed only eventual champion Texas and their score of 7-under 277.
All five Lobos finished within the top 23, and were led by Andre Garcia who shot a 1-under 70 to follow up yesterday’s 2-under total (68-72). Garcia eventually finished in sole possession of fifth place overall at 3-under 210.
UNM Head Coach Glen Millican modestly described the day as “very good” and continued on by saying he was “very happy with the result this week.”
“It was great to see us come out and play a good final round,” he said. “All five were inside the top 23 and both freshmen had great finishes to go along with a fifth place finish from Garcia.”
The consistent improvement displayed this week had Millican in high spirits.
“This was a good start to the spring for us,” he said.
However, this day belonged to Samuel Kim, who shot the low round of the day, a 5-under 66. Kim shot a 30 on the front nine, and finished with two birdies in his closing holes.
Kim’s score of 66 today was the second lowest round of the tournament, trailing only the pair of 6-under 65’s posted in yesterday’s first round by eventual medalist Beau Hossler and second place finisher Frank Garber.
Kim finished the tournament in a tie for eleventh at 3-over 216 (75-75-66) along with Washington’s Carl Yuan and Washington State’s Aaron Whalen.
UNM freshman Sean Carlon secured his first top-15 finish as a college player by shooting a 1-over 72 today, and finishing his final three holes in 2-under fashion. For the tournament Carlon came in at 4-over 217 (77-68-72) and finished in a three-way tie for 14th.
Gustavo Morantes was also able to secure a top-20 finish after today’s 2-over 73. His efforts also placed him in a three-way tie for 19th at 6-over 219 (75-71-73).
Tidying up the Lobos squad was Andre Bevins, who came in with a 1-over 72 today and finished at 8-over 221 (72-77-72).
For the tournament the Lobos led the pack in par-3 scoring, with an average of 3.05 and finished this week’s par-3s at 3-over as a team. New Mexico also led the tournament in pars with 164 and tallied the fourth most birdies with 49.
Texas had three players finish inside the top-10 in medalist Beau Hossler who came in at 11-under 202 (65-70-67), Doug Ghim who finished seventh at 1-under 212 (72-70-70) and Gavin Hall who tallied a 2-over 215 (74-72-69), good for ninth place. These strong performances lead to Texas being crowned this year’s champion, with a final score of 9-under 843.
Washington finished at 4-under 848, good for second place as a team. The Huskies were lead by two top-3 finishers in Frank Garber (9-under 204) and Jonathan Sanders (8-under 205).
Rounding out the top-3 was California at even par 852. Cal was lead by fourth place finisher Collin Morikawa at 4-under 209 and Shotaro Ban who finish at 2-over 215 was good for ninth place overall.
In the Arizona Medalist, the individual competition of the Intercollegiate, two New Mexico players tied for 15th place overall. Ben Tolsma and Mark MacGrath both finished at 15-over 228, and shot their best scores of the tournament today in a even par 71 for Tolsma and a 1-over 72 for MacGrath respectively.
Isaac Alderete shaved off eight strokes today off of his previous tournament low and finished in 23rd position at 22-over 235.
UNM will next compete in the John Burns Intercollegiate hosted by the University of Hawaii Feb. 17-19 at Wailua Golf Course.
