ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – If you believe in omens, then the weather on Friday was a positive sign for the outlook of the University of New Mexico’s 2016 baseball season. A beautiful sunny sky and temperatures in the mid-60s greeted the team as it held its first practice of the new year.

“We’re going to have a really good team this year,” head coach Ray Birmingham said, “and they will have the chance to do some special things. We aim to play every pitch harder than the other team. The talent level is there.”

The team performed some base running drills, took batting practice, and worked on its bunt defense before holding an intrasquad scrimmage.

“We’re excited to get back out here,” sophomore third baseman Carl Stajduhar said. “Ever since the last out against San Diego State (in the Mountain West Tournament championship game) we’ve been itching to get back on the field.”
