UNM Looks for Second Straight Win at Air Force

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – The University of New Mexico women’s basketball team will look for its second straight victory on Wednesday, as it will travel up to Colorado Springs to take on the Air Force Falcons. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. and the game will be available on the Mountain West Network.

About The Matchup:
The Lobos will look for their second straight victory on Wednesday, Jan. 27 at Air Force. The Lobos have not won on the road since Dec. 30 against Nevada in the conference opener. This will be the 39th meeting between the two teams. The Lobos lead the all-time series 36-2. The Lobos are 18-2 in Colorado Springs and have won the last five meetings, three of those on the road. Under head coach Yvonne Sanchez, the Lobos are 6-1 and 30-1 since she became part of the Lobo program.
 
About New Mexico:
New Mexico is currently fifth in the Mountain West with a 3-3 record and 10-7 overall record. The Lobos are coming off a dominating 71-57 win over San Josè State last Saturday. Sophomore Cherise Beynon led the team with her second double-double of the season of 17 points and 10 rebounds. Senior Khadijah Shumpert finished with 16 points and nine rebounds which was more than enough to hit a career milestone of 1,000 points. She is the 14th player in UNM history to reach 1,000 career points and 500 career rebounds.
 
The Lobos are shooting 38 percent from the field and 29 percent from the free throw line. They are averaging 64.2 ppg. Shumpert leads the squad in points, averaging 14.5 per game and 6.7 rpg. Beynon leads the Lobos in conference action at 15.7 ppg and 7.0 rpg.
 
About Air Force:
The Falcons have yet to win a game this season. They are 0-18 overall and 0-7 in the Mountain West. They are averaging 47.1 ppg to their oppoenents 70.4. They are shooting 33 percent from the field, 23 percent from the three and 59 percent from the free throw line.
 
Sophomore guard Cortney Porter is leading the Air Force squad with 11.1 ppg. She averaged 3.4 rebounds per game and shooting 35 percent from the field. Junior forward Sarah Fotsch is another starter that will be a threat. She is averaging 6.0 ppg and 3.8 rpg. She is shooting 38 percent from the field. Air Force is coming off a 70-46 loss to Fresno State. Cortney Porter and Taylor Parker led the Falcons with 11 points each. Porter was 3-for-10 from the field and 5-for-6 from the free throw line to go along with four assists and three steals. Parker finished 5-for-10 from the field and with three assists and one block.
 
About the Coaches:
Yvonne Sanchez is in her fifth season as head coach of the Lobos. This is her 16th year with the program. Sanchez holds a 70-73 record as head coach and is currently 10-7 on the season and 3-3 in Mountain West action. This will be the eighth matchup for Sanchez as head coach and 32nd matchup since she became a part of the program.
 
Chris Gobrecht is in her first season with the Air Force Falcons. She is currently looking for her first victory of the season as the Falcons are 0-18 overall and 0-7 in the Mountain West.
