COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — University of New Mexico track & field senior Allan Hamilton has been named Mountain West Men’s Indoor Field Athlete of the Week for meets contested from January 22-23.
Hamilton, hailing from Edinburgh, Scotland, leaped 24 feet, 9 ½ inches (7.55 meters) in the men’s long jump to place second overall and first collegiately at the Cherry & Silver Invitational this past weekend at the Albuquerque Convention Center.
He currently ranks 19th in the NCAA with his mark and leads the Mountain West by over six inches.
His mark also beat the NCAA’s second-ranked long jumper, Steven Barze of Southeastern Louisiana, in head-to-head competition after Barze fouled all three of his attempts.
For Hamilton, this conference-leading mark extends a streak of domination over the Mountain West in the long jump. Hamilton led the MW in the long jump for the entirety of last season and has done the same to start the 2016 indoor campaign.
This honor is the first indoor athlete-of-the-week honor for Hamilton, who earned two outdoors in back-to-back week (April 14 and April 22) last season.
Overall, it’s the first indoor athlete-of-the-week honor for New Mexico this season and the 10th since the MW expanded the number of conference athletes of the week from two to four (track athletes and field athletes for both genders) last season.
New Mexico returns to action Saturday when it hosts Air Force, California, Colorado State, Kansas State, Nebraska, Texas Tech, TCU and Utah State for the New Mexico Team Invitational at the Albuquerque Convention Center.
