Lobos Return to Action with Spartans After Final Bye Week

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – After having its final bye week of the season, the University of New Mexico women’s basketball team will return to action this weekend, hosting San José State Saturday in WisePies Arena at 2 p.m. MT.

About The Matchup:
The Lobos will face San Jose State Saturday Jan. 23 at 2 p.m. This will be just the sixth matchup in all-time history between the two teams. The Lobos lead the all-time series 5-0, claiming their fifth straight win over the Spartans last year in San Jose 64-62. This will be the fourth matchup under head coach Yvonne Sanchez. She leads the series over third year Spartan coach Jamie Craighead 3-0.
 
About New Mexico:
New Mexico is coming of its final bye week of the season. They are currently 9-7 on the season and 2-3 in the Mountain West. Last week, the Lobos suffered a 66-48 loss to Wyoming. Senior Khadijah Shumpert and sophomore Cherise Beynon combined for 25 points but it wasn’t enough to outlast the Cowgirls.
 
On the season, the Lobos are shooting 38 percent from the field and 29 percent from the three. They are averaging 40.6 rebounds per game and turning the ball over 15.5 times per game. Shumpert is leading the squad overall at 14.4 ppg and 6.6 rpg but Beynon has made the most impact in conference games with 15.4 ppg and 6.4 rpg. The Lobos are averaging 57.4 ppg in conference play and are shooting 33 percent from the field.  
 
About San José State:
The Spartans are currently 6-12 on the season and sit in fourth place of the Mountain West with a 4-3 record. They are coming off a heartbreaking 78-75 loss to Boise State Wednesday. On the season, they are shooting 39 percent from the field and 32 percent from the three-point line. They give up 77.9 points per game to their opponents but they average 75.1 ppg. They average 40.3 rebounds per game and 16.7 turnovers per game. In conference, they have wins over Wyoming, San Diego State, Air Force and Utah State.
 
They have really relied on guard Dezz Ramos, as she averages 19.4 ppg. She is shooting 43 percent from the field and 41 percent from the three. Nyre Harris is third on the team in scoring at 9.8 ppg. Riana Byrd will see time off the bench, scoring 9.4 ppg and leading the Spartans in rebounding at 7.0 rpg. Myzhanique Ladd leads the team in shooting with a 51 percent from the field.
 
About the Coaches:
Yvonne Sanchez is in her fifth season as head coach of the Lobos. This is her 16th year with the program. Sanchez holds a 69-73 record as head coach and is currently 9-7 on the season and 2-3 in Mountain West action. This will be her fourth matchup with San José State. As head coach, she leads 3-0 against Craighead. The Lobos have won five straight over the Spartans.   
 
Jamie Craighead is in her third season with the Spartans. She owns a 32-48 record at San José State. She is currently 6-12 on the season and fourth in the Mountain West with a 4-3 record.
