ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – The University of New Mexico softball team returned to action today to start the 2016 season with its first practice out at the Lobo Softball Field.
The day consisted of mostly fundamental drills after getting their arms warmed up, working on first and third’s and bunt defense. The Lobo pitchers warmed up to help with the bunt defense, getting some pitches in on the first day.
The Lobos return 11 letterwinners from last year’s team and will add seven new freshman and redshirt freshman Jade Gray into the mix, who spent last season recovery from shoulder surgery. Four pitchers return from last year’s staff, including Krissy Fortner, Lauren Soles, Lisa Rodrigues and Tess McPherson. Top Lobo slugger Mariah Rimmer returns for her final season.
New Mexico will get game action going mid-February, starting out with the Kajikawa Classic for the fifth year in a row. The Lobos will open action with a tough slate of San Diego, Stanford, Cal Poly, Oregon State and Kentucky in their first weekend on Feb. 12. For the full schedule, click here.
