WOMEN’S PREVIEW | MEN’S PREVIEW

With a completely new surface and years of history underneath, the track at the Albuquerque Convention Center is ready for a new season of track & field.

And so are the Lobos.

The University of New Mexico track & field program is less than a week away from opening its 2016 season, and both the men’s and women’s teams are primed for another run of success this indoor season.

The men, winners of three straight Mountain West indoor titles, and the women, winners of two straight such titles, are riding high as perennial leaders of the conference. The track to the MW championships go through the Lobos and the Albuquerque Convention Center.

And as New Mexico gets prepared to defend its titles, they’ll look to confront another demanding home schedule, which features four straight home meets on four consecutive weekends before hosting the conference meet.

Powerhouse teams from across the nation are descending on Albuquerque once again, giving the Lobos a number of chances to hone their skills and talent as they strive for success.

That quest for success starts next week, as the Lobos open their season by hosting the Cherry & Silver Invitational on Friday to Saturday.

The track is ready. The competition is ready.

Women’s cross country won the NCAA title in November, but track & field is a completely different discipline. The pieces and the experience are there, so a third straight conference title and more accolades at the national level are certainly possible.

Fewer than 10 athletes were Lobos the last time New Mexico men’s track & field didn’t win a conference title. There’s tons of talent in certain events, and more than a few prospective All-American candidates. Is title No. 4 imminent?
