ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – The University of New Mexico will conclude this week traveling to Laramie, Wyo. Saturday to take on the Wyoming Cowgirls at 2 p.m. MT. The game will be broadcasted live on the Mountain West Network.
About The Matchup:
New Mexico will face Wyoming on Saturday, January 16 with a 2 p.m. MT tipoff time. This will be the 70th meeting between the two teams. UNM leads the all-time series 39-30. In Laramie, Wyoming, New Mexico trails 22-11. Under head coach Yvonne Sanchez, the Lobos are 4-4 against the Cowgirls. UNM is 20-14 with Sanchez a part of the program. Last season, the Lobos swept Wyoming with a 60-54 victory in WisePies Arena and a 66-55 win on the road in Laramie.
About New Mexico:
After two straight losses, the Lobos (9-6, 2-2 MW) are coming off a big 14-point win over UNLV Wednesday. The Lobos put together a big offensive effort, claiming a 67-53 victory over the Lady Rebels. For the first time this season, the Lobos had four players in double-figures; Khadijah Shumpert (18), Bryce Owens (15), Cherise Beynon (13) and Whitney Johnson (11). The Lobos shot 42 percent from the field, 33 percent from the three and 78 percent from the free throw line.
Shumpert continues to lead the Lobos on offense with 14.3 ppg this season. Beynon is right behind, averaging 11.9 ppg. Owens picks up 8.7 ppg. The Lobos are shooting 39 percent from the field and 29 percent from the three. They are outscoring their opponents 64.9-60.1 and out rebounding 40.3-37.5.
About Wyoming:
Wyoming is coming off a 67-66 loss to San Jose State Wednesday night. They dropped to 9-6 on the season and 2-3 in conference play. SJSU got a last second shot to claim the victory. The Cowgirls we led by their leading scorer Marquelle Dent. She recorded a team-high 20 points and seven assists. She leads the team with 18.3 points per game. She is shooting 39 percent from the field and 23 percent from the three. Freshman Marta Gomez is second on the team in scoring. She averages 11.5 ppg and 4.6 rpg.
Wyoming is shooting 40 percent from the field and 30 percent beyond the arc this season. The Cowgirls are also outscoring opponents 67.1-63.0 and out rebounding teams 37.5-36.9. On the season, the Cowgirls have won two out of three overtimes. They beat Cal State Fullerton 61-56 and Montana State 75-69. They fell to Gonzaga 61-57 in overtime.
About the Coaches:
Yvonne Sanchez is in her fifth season as head coach of the Lobos. This is her 16th year with the program. Sanchez holds a 69-72 record as head coach and is currently 9-6 on the season and 2-2 in Mountain West action. This will be her ninth matchup with Wyoming as head coach. The Lobos lead the all-time series against Wyoming 38-30.
Joe Legerski is in his 13th season with Wyoming. He owns a 241-146 all-time record at Wyoming. He is currently 9-6 on the season and 2-3 in the Mountain West.
