ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – After a tough loss to Fresno State a week ago, the University of New Mexico women’s basketball team will look to bounce back as it heads to Utah State Saturday. Tipoff is set for 2 p.m. MT and the game will be available on the Mountain West Network.
About The Matchup:
The Lobos will travel to Utah State on Saturday after having a bye game on Wednesday. This will be the 18th matchup between the two teams. The lobos lead the all-time series 12-5 and are 2-3 under head coach Yvonne Sanchez. The Lobos are 6-2 on the road in Logan, Utah and have won the last two games against the Aggies. The Lobos won the last contest against them last season, claiming a 56-51 win in Dee Glen Smith Spectrum.
About New Mexico:
The Lobos (8-5, 1-1) are coming off a tough double-overtime loss to Fresno State a week ago. They haven’t had competition since then due to have a “bye” game on Wednesday. The Lobos are averaging 65.4 ppg and 42.2 rpg. They are shooting 39 percent from the field and 28 percent from the three point line. Senior forward Khadijah Shumpert continues to lead the Lobos with 14.8 ppg and 6.8 rpg. She finished with 23 points and 10 rebounds last Saturday, her third double-double of the season. Sophomore guard Cherise Beynon is also another threat for the Lobos. She is second on the team in scoring at 11.1 ppg. She is coming off her first double-double of the season against Fresno State. She finished with a season-high 17 points and season-high 10 rebounds.
About Utah State:
Utah State is 6-8 on the season and currently eighth in the MW with 1-2 record. The Aggies are coming off a tough loss to Boise State on Wednesday. They fell 84-78 in overtime fashion. They have lost four out of their last five games and have been relying heavily on top Aggie scorer Funda Nakkasoglu. The sophomore guard is averaging 21.1 points per game and is shooting 42 percent from the field and 40 percent from the three point line. She is also giving up the ball many times during the game, averaging 4.9 assists per game. Senior forward Tijana Djukic is second on the team at 9.6 ppg but leads the team in rebounding at 7.2 rpg. She is shooting 52 percent from the field.
As a team, Utah State is averaging 71.5 ppg and 41.8 rpg. The Aggies are shooting 41 percent from the field and 31 percent from the three point line. They hold their opponents 71.8 ppg and a 33 shooting percentage from the three. They average 14.6 turnovers per game to their opponents 15.4.
