ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – The University of New Mexico women’s basketball team will look for its first road win of the season Saturday as it heads to SMU. Tipoff is set for 4 p.m. MT/5 p.m. CT and will be available on PonyUp TV or by radio on 610 KNML.
About The Matchup:
New Mexico will face SMU for its second Texas road game of the week. This will be the fifth match up in program history. The two teams are tied 2-2 overall with the Lobos winning the last match up 66-51 on March 17, 2010 in the first round of the WNIT. This will be the first matchup with head Sanchez at the helm but her second in her New Mexico career as she was a part of the 2010 team as an assistant.
About New Mexico:
The Lobos are looking for their first road win of the season as they are 0-2 on the road after losses at New Mexico State and UTEP. They are averaging 70.3 points per game and 42.9 rebounds per game. They are shooting 42 percent from the field, 32 percent from three-point range and 63 percent from the free throw line. Senior forward Khadijah Shumpert is leading the squad with 13.9 ppg and 7.5 rpg. She recorded her second double-double of the season in the loss at UTEP, collecting 20 points and 10 rebounds.
About SMU:
SMU is currently 3-3 on the season. They finished 10th in the American Athletic Conference last season with a 3-15 record. The Mustangs are coming off a 60-57 loss to North Texas on Tuesday. The Mustangs are averaging 69 points per game and 40 rebounds per game. They are shooting 41 percent from the field and 30 percent from three-point range. From the charity stripe they are shooting 84 percent. Sophomore forward Alicia Froling is leading the squad in points, averaging 14.3 ppg and 9.7 rpg. She is shooting 32 percent from the field. Sophomore guard McKenzie Adams is second on the team in scoring with 13.7 ppg. She is shooting 34 percent from the field and is one of their go-to shooters from the three at 33 percent.
About the Coaches:
Yvonne Sanchez is in her fifth season as head coach of the Lobos. This is her 16th year with the program. Sanchez holds a 64-69 record as head coach and is currently 4-3 on the season. This is her first match up with SMU as a head coach but was an assistant the last time they played them in the first round of the WNIT.
Rhonda Rompola is in her 25th season as head coach of SMU and owns a 429-302 record for the Mustangs. She is currently 3-3 on the season. The Mustangs finished 10th in the American Athletic Conference last season.
