ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – The University of New Mexico women’s basketball team will open up Mountain West action on Wednesday, Dec. 30 at Nevada. Tipoff is set for 6:30 p.m. PT/7:30 p.m. MT in Lawlor Events Center. The game will be available on the Mountain West Network.
About The Matchup:
The Lobos will face Nevada in the Mountain West opener on Wednesday, Dec. 30 at 6:30 p.m. PT/7:30 p.m. MT. This will be the eighth meeting between the two teams and the Lobos lead the all-time series 4-3. The Lobos are 3-2 against the Wolf Pack under head coach Yvonne Sanchez. In Reno, the Lobos are 2-2. Last season, the Lobos only played Nevada once and claimed a 63-45 win in WisePies Arena on Feb. 14, 2015.
About New Mexico:
The Lobos (7-4) have won three out of their last four. Their 7-4 record is the first time since the 2012-13 season that the Lobos have had a winning record heading into conference. Senior forward Khadijah Shumpert is leading the squad with 14.9 ppg and 5.9 rpg. She is shooting 58 percent from the field. Sophomore guard Cherise Beynon is second on the team in scoring at 10.3 ppg. The Lobos are averaging 66.7 ppg and 41.8 rpg. They are shooting 40 percent from the field, 30 percent from the three and 64 percent from the free throw line.
About Nevada:
Nevada heads into conference play with a 1-10 record with its only win coming against San Francisco State on Dec. 8. The Wolf Pack is averaging 56.0 ppg and 35.3 rpg. They are shooting 36.9 percent from the field and 25.3 percent from three-point range. They return just one starter from last year’s squad in Kelsey Kaelin. She is fourth on the team in scoring at 6.9 ppg.
They are really relying on senior forward Nyasha LeSure. She is leading the team with 12.8 ppg and 5.9 rpg. She is shooting 49.5 percent from the field. Junior guard Stephanie Schmid is second on the team in scoring at 9.8 ppg. She is shooting 25 percent from the field and 25 percent from the three. She has made 24 three’s in nonconference. Nevada is allowing their opponents to average 71.4 ppg and to shot 46 percent from the field. They average 4.2 three’s per game
About the Coaches:
Yvonne Sanchez is in her fifth season as head coach of the Lobos. This is her 16th year with the program. Sanchez holds a 67-70 record as head coach and is currently 7-4 on the season. This will be the sixth match up under Sanchez. She is 3-2 against Nevada as head coach.
Jane Albright is in her eighth season as head coach of the Wolf Pack. She has a 100-131 record at Nevada and is currently 1-10 on the season heading into conference action.
