Men’s Tennis to Host Alumni Match

MTENMTEN

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M.—The University of New Mexico men’s tennis team is taking to the courts one more time before the start of their Spring season, but not in the way that you’d expect.

On January 11th the current men’s tennis squad is taking on the alumni Lobo tennis players in an alumni match at Linda Estes Tennis Faculty on the indoor courts.

“We’re very excited to host this event,” said head coach Bart Scott. “We have a lot of talented former Lobos in town who still play at a high level. It should be a fun night for Lobo tennis past and present, and a great opportunity for our community to see our current team take on the legends from the past who have paved the way for these Lobos.”

The Lobo alumni coaches will be holding a clinic from 6 to 7 p.m. The clinic is an opportunity to get on the courts with former UNM tennis players. The alumni will run courts with specific drills aimed at improving certain parts of the tennis game. The clinic costs $50 and you can sign up through the Lobo Tennis Club at (505) 925-5991. The clinic is limited to 24 participants.

Scott added that UNM tennis’ past is so deep that we could have a legendary coaching staff even in Tim Cass and Alan Dils.

“It’s such a great idea to have an alumni tennis match,” said Tim Cass. Cass is a former player and former chief operating officer at UNM. “Our tennis alums are very engaged in UNM and this is another chance for them to be involved with the university they all love.”

Following the clinic, the former players will take on the current team in dual match format. The matches start at 7 p.m. The price of this event is free, but there will be an opportunity for donations. All proceeds will go towards the UNM men’s tennis team.

“This event is something new for the Lobo tennis community to add to the calendar. It will be great to see how a very competitive alumni team stacks up against our current crop of Lobo superstars,” said assistant coach Ben Dunbar. He encourages all to come out for some high quality tennis, food and great company!
