ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – The University of New Mexico women’s basketball team returns home to play the second and final round of the Rio Grande Rivalry, hosting New Mexico State in its final nonconference game of the season. Tipoff is set for 2 p.m. on Sunday in WisePies Arena. The game will be available on the Mountain West Network.
About The Matchup:
The Lobos will face New Mexico State for round two of the Rio Grande Rivalry at 2 p.m. on Sunday. This is the 72nd meeting between the two teams and the Lobos lead the all-time series 47-24. Under head coach Yvonne Sanchez, the Lobos are 5-2 and 27-3 while Sanchez has been involved with the program. The Lobos will look to get even with the Aggies as they fell in Las Cruces 78-59 on Nov. 17.
About New Mexico:
The Lobos (7-3) have now won three straight games after a dominating 72-53 win over Minnesota on Wednesday. Senior forward Khadijah Shumpert led the squad with a career-tying 27 points in her home state. She went 10-for-13 from the field and was perfect from the free throw line (7-7). Shumpert leads the squad with 15.4 ppg and 7.0 rpg. She is shooting a team-best 58 percent from the field and 72 percent from the free throw line. The Lobos are shooting 41 percent from the field and outscoring their opponents 68.7-60.8. They are also out-rebounding their opponents 42.1-36.3.
About New Mexico State:
The Aggies are currently 8-2 on the season and are coming off a 75-66 win over Mountain West foe San José State. Senior guard Sasha Weber led the squad with 20 points, going 6-for-11 from the three. Junior forward Brianna Freeman picked up a double-double of 12 points and 10 rebounds with a team-leading four assists after missing out on the Easter New Mexico win. The Aggies are 3-2 in their last five games, suffering their only two losses of the season to Arizona and UTEP. They are shooting 41 percent from the field and 31 percent from the three-point line. They are averaging 74.3 points per game and 41.2 rebounds per game. Weber is the top scorer for the Aggies, averaging 13.2 ppg. She is second on the squad in shooting at 45 percent. Freeman is second on the team at 11.9 ppg and 7.9 rpg, shooting a team-high 53 percent from the field.
About the Coaches:
Yvonne Sanchez is in her fifth season as head coach of the Lobos. This is her 16th year with the program. Sanchez holds a 67-69 record as head coach and is currently 7-3 on the season. This will be the eighth match up under Sanchez. She is 5-2 as head coach and 27-3 with her involvement in the program.
Mark Trakh is in his fifth season at the helm of the New Mexico State women’s basketball program. He owns a 62-70 record at New Mexico State and is currently 8-2 in the 2015-16 season after a 75-66 win over Mountain West foe San Josè State.
