Wehan Named NSCAA Scholar All-America

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – The awards keep rolling in for University of New Mexico redshirt junior midfielder Chris Wehan. Already an NSCAA All-Region honoree, Academic All-Conference USA and a repeat First Team All-Conference USA winner, on Thursday he was named a Second Team NSCAA Scholar All-American. Chris Gurule, who was also named NSCAA All-Region, earned Scholar All-West Region honors.
Wehan led the Lobos in scoring for a second straight season with 10 goals and two assists. He was a two-time C-USA Offensive Player of the Week award winner this season, and on Sept. 8 he was the consensus National Player of the Week. Four of his goals were game-winners, and he played 1,606 minutes for UNM this season while starting every match. He owns a 3.42 cumulative GPA in communications.
Gurule, who also earned CoSIDA Academic All-District honors, was named Second Team All-Conference USA after starting all 18 games and playing 1,666 minutes at center back for the Lobos. He was steady all season on the backline and was responsible for both of UNM’s team saves this year with a pair of goal line clearances. His lone assist of the season came on Nicholas Rochowski’s game-tying goal at No. 19 LMU on Sept. 13 in an eventual 2-1 win. He owns a 3.60 cumulative GPA in business administration.
To be named to a Scholar All-America Team, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.30 cumulative grade point average (on a 4.0 scale) throughout his career, start more than 50 percent of all games and be a significant contributor to the team.
