ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – Oniel Fisher was drafted out of the University of New Mexico in the second round, 40th overall, of the 2015 MLS SuperDraft and signed a first team contract on March 17. Despite only one appearance for Seattle Sounders FC in his first three months, he quickly established himself as a starting-caliber left back, and on Thursday he was named on of the Best Young Players in the MLS.
Fisher appeared in 12 games during his rookie season. He made nine starts, including both of Seattle’s postseason matches. Ari Liljenwall, who covers Sounders FC for MLS.com, picked Fisher over Seattle’s first-round pick in the 2015 draft, Christian Roldan, and had this to say about the former Lobo:
“(Fisher) came seemingly out of nowhere to lock down Seattle’s starting left back job during the latter half of the season. The University of New Mexico product is still developing but he could end up being a young, cheap and consistent option for Seattle’s backline if he continues to progress.”
