UNM Heads to Minnesota for Final Nonconference Road Game

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – The University of New Mexico women’s basketball team is on the road for the final time in nonconference action this week. The Lobos head to Minnesota for a matchup on Wednesday at 11 a.m. MT/Noon CT in Williams Arena. The game will be available on the Big Ten Network with a subscription.

About The Matchup:
New Mexico will face Minnesota for their final nonconference road trip of the season. The Golden Gophers lead the all-time series 3-1. The last time the two teams met was on Nov. 30, 2005 in the annual UNM Thanksgiving tourney. The Lobos claimed a 62-44 victory over Minnesota. This will be the first matchup under head coach Yvonne Sanchez. Sanchez was a part of that win in 2005 as an assistant coach. The Lobos are 1-1 at home against the Gophers but are 0-2 in Williams Arena.
 
About New Mexico:
The Lobos (6-3) are coming off back-to-back wins over SMU and Pepperdine. They claimed a 63-58 win over SMU and a 60-52 win over Pepperdine last week. For the season, the Lobos are averaging 68.3 ppg and 41.4 rpg. They are shooting 41 percent from the field 30 percent from three-point range and 61 percent from the free throw line. Khadijah Shumpert leads the way with 14.1 ppg and 6.9 rpg, with a 55 percent shooting percentage.
 
About Minnesota:
Minnesota is a tough opponent in its own house, as they are undefeated this season in Williams Arena. It is 6-2 on the season with losses coming at No. 14/13 Duke and in a neutral game with Auburn at the San Juan Shootout. The Gophers have relied on a veteran lineup as they have been starting three seniors, a junior and a sophomore. They are averaging 83 points a game to go along with 45 rebounds per game. They shoot 45 percent from the field, 36 percent from the three and 73 percent from the free throw line. Senior guard Rachel Banham is leading the way for their squad, averaging 24.1 ppg and 7.0 rpg. She is shooting a team-best 40 percent from the three (25-62) on the season and is 46 percent from the field. She is also the best free throw shooter at 86 percent. Sophomore guard Carlie Wagner is second on the squad in scoring at 20.5 ppg. She brings down 5.9 rpg and is shooting 45 percent from the field.
 
About the Coaches:
Yvonne Sanchez is in her fifth season as head coach of the Lobos. This is her 16th year with the program. Sanchez holds a 66-69 record as head coach and is currently 6-3 on the season. This is her first matchup with Minnesota as head coach. She was an assistant with the Lobo program the last time the two teams met and the Lobos won.
 
Marlene Stollings is in her second season at Minnesota and holds a 31-12 record in her Golden Gopher career. She is currently 6-2 on the season with the only losses coming on the road to No. 14/13 Duke and a neutral matchup with Auburn at the San Juan Shootout.
