ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – The University of New Mexico men’s soccer team had two players earn All-Southeast Region honors from the NSCAA Wednesday. Junior midfielder Chris Wehan was named to the first team, and junior defender Chris Gurule was named to the second team.
Wehan led the Lobos in scoring for a second straight season with 10 goals and two assists on his way to earning First Team All-Conference USA honors. He was a two-time C-USA Offensive Player of the Week award winner this season, and on Sept. 8 he was the consensus National Player of the Week. Four of his goals were game-winners, and he played 1,606 minutes for UNM this season while starting every match.
Gurule was named Second Team All-Conference USA after starting all 18 games and playing 1,666 minutes at center back for the Lobos. He was steady all season on the backline and was responsible for both of UNM’s team saves this year with a pair of goal line clearances. His lone assist of the season came on Nicholas Rochowski’s game-tying goal at No. 19 LMU on Sept. 13 in an eventual 2-1 win.
Both Wehan and Gurule are excellent students as well. Wehan earned C-USA All-Academic honors, and Gurule was named CoSIDA Academic All-District.
* The regions are based on conference affiliation, and Conference USA is designated in the southeast.
