UNM Swim and Dive to Face Tough Test This Weekend

Swimming vs. Northern ColoradoSwimming vs. Northern Colorado

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – The University of New Mexico swimming and diving team travels to San Diego this weekend for what should be a grueling day at San Diego State featuring both the Aztecs and the Washington State Cougars. SDSU is the reigning Mountain West champions, and WSU has been competitive in the early goings of the very difficult Pac-12 while earning a No. 32 national ranking.
“This will be our biggest meet before the conference championships,” UNM head coach Kunio Kono said. “San Diego State is the champion of the Mountain West, and they obviously have very good swimmers and divers. Washington State is a very well coached team. Their coach, Tom Jager, is a former Olympic gold medalist for the U.S., and he has a great team too.”
The Aztecs are ranked No. 5 in CollegeSwimming.com’s mid-major poll this week, well ahead of the Lobos at No. 45. They own wins this season over Oregon State and Vanderbilt, which included some of the fastest times ever recorded at the Aztec Aquaplex.
The Cougars, meanwhile, lost a close meet at home to No. 7 Stanford to start the season, and then went and won at Arizona State in late October. They also defeated UNLV but lost to Arizona last weekend.
“We’re going to have some very good races against two tough teams,” Kono said. “It’s going to be a fun one. I’m very excited.”
