Lobos Host Annual Thanksgiving Tournament Friday, Saturday

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – This weekend the University of New Mexico women’s basketball team will host its annual UNM Thanksgiving Tournament looking for its first tournament championship since the 2008 season. The tournament features Southern Utah, North Carolina A&T and Duquesne. The Lobos will face off with Southern Utah first on Friday at 5 p.m. before taking on either North Carolina A&T or Duquesne Saturday at 4 p.m.

Tournament Schedule:
Friday, Nov. 27 – 3 p.m. – Duquesne (Home Team) vs. North Carolina A&T
Friday, Nov. 27 – 5 p.m. – Southern Utah vs. New Mexico (Home Team)
Saturday, Nov. 28 – 2 p.m. – Southern Utah (Away Team) vs. North Carolina A&T/Duquesne
Saturday, Nov. 28 – 4 p.m. – North Carolina A&T/Duquesne vs. New Mexico (Home Team)
 
About the Match-up:
New Mexico will face Southern Utah in the first game of the UNM Thanksgiving Tournament Friday. This will be the first meeting between the two teams under head coach Yvonne Sanchez but the sixth meeting overall for the program. The Lobos lead the all-time series 3-2.
 
The last time the two teams met was on Dec. 14, 1996. The Lobos beat the Thunderbirds 62-54. The Lobos will be looking for their first tourney title since the 2008 season.
 
The Thunderbirds are off to a rough start in the 2015-16 season, suffering four losses in as many games. They are shooting just 31 percent from the field, 28 percent from free throw range and 61 percent from the free throw line. They are averaging 46 rebounds per game to go along with 55 ppg. Southern Utah is led by junior forward Jessica Richardson. She leads the team with 14.3 ppg and 10.5 rpg. She is shooting 46 percent from the field.
 
The Lobos are coming off an 83-43 win over Nicholls State earlier this week and will look to continue the WisePies Arena streak. Through the first four games, the Lobos are 44 percent from the field, 35.7 percent from 3-point range and 55.4 percent from the free throw line. They are averaging 72.8 ppg to go along with 46 rpg.
 
About the Coaches:
Yvonne Sanchez is in her fifth season as head coach of the Lobos. This is her 16th year with the program. Sanchez holds a 63-67 record as head coach and is currently 3-1 on the season. This will be her first match up with Southern Utah and the program’s sixth meeting overall.
 
Chris Boettcher is in her second season as head coach of Southern Utah and owns a 13-19 record for the Thunderbirds. He is currently 0-4 on the season. The Thunderbirds finished 10th in the Big Sky last season.
