ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – After claiming a bounce-back win over Sacramento State last Saturday, the University of New Mexico women’s basketball team will look to continue the winning momentum, playing host to Nicholls State Tuesday in WisePies Arena at 7 p.m.

About the Match-up:
New Mexico will face Nicholls State Tuesday. This will be the third match-up between the Lobos and the Colonels in program history. The Lobos lead the all-time series 2-0. The two meetings before were in 2000 and 2007, when head coach Yvonne Sanchez was an assistant under former head coach Don Flanagan.
In 2007, the Lobos claimed a dominating 79-49 win over the Colonels. Now assistant coach Amy Beggin was the leading scorer for the Lobos with 21 points, going 7-for-8 from the field and 4-for-5 from 3-point range.
Nicholls State comes to Albuquerque with a 1-1 record. The Colonels started the season off with a 98-65 win over Southern University New Orleans but suffered a 81-79 loss to Prairie View A&M.
They are suffering from injuries in this early nonconference schedule as four returners are sitting out to get better. Freshmen have been relied on early as three have been in the starting lineup with Sammi Deakin-Sharpe leading the freshman group with 13 ppg. Junior Hope Pawlowski leads the team with 17 ppg and 6.0 rpg while shooting 48 percent from the field.
After falling to New Mexico State last Tuesday, the Lobos regrouped and claimed an 84-71 win over Sacramento State to bounce back in the winning column. Khadijah Shumpert led the way for the Lobos with 21 points and 10 rebounds, her first double-double of the season. The Lobos dished out 24 assists with a career-high nine coming from Cherise Beynon.
For the season, the Lobos are shooting 44.9 percent from the field, 38.9 percent from 3-point range and 54 percent from the free throw line. They are averaging 69.3 ppg and 42.3 rpg. Beynon leads the team in points with 11.3 ppg while Shumpert leads in rebounds at 8.7 per game.
About the Coaches:
Yvonne Sanchez is in her fifth season as head coach of the Lobos. This is her 16th year with the program. Sanchez holds a 62-67 record as head coach and is currently 2-1 on the season. This will be her first match up against Nicholls State as head coach but was an assistant at the time of the previous two games play against the Colonels.
DoBee Plaisance is in her eighth season as head coach of Nicholls State and owns a 83-125 record for the Colonels. She is currently 1-1 on the season.
