ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – The University of New Mexico softball team and head coach Erica Beach announced the signing of Lauren Wilmert for the 2016-17 season.
“Lauren Wilmert is one of the best ball players in her class in all of New Mexico,” said Beach. “Not only is she strong behind the plate but she is a great hitter that will provide power to our lineup. We are so happy Lauren will be playing for her home town team. Welcome to the Lobo Family!”
Wilmert, a catcher, commits to UNM from Volcano Vista High School here in Albuquerque. She is familiar with UNM softball due to playing on the softball field for the state tournament. She was named 2015 District Player of the Year after leading her team to the state tournament.
Last year, she earned many honors to go along with District Player of the Year. She was a First Team All-State selection and a First Team All-Metro selection. Last season, she hit a total of 16 home runs with three coming in a single game. She was also named a First Team All-District selection in volleyball this season.
Academics is also a part of Wilmert’s background as she earned the 2015 All-Academic District and Metro award during the volleyball season. Wilmert plays for the New Mexico Sundancers during the summer ball season.
“I am super excited to have the opportunity to play for the UNM softball program,” said Wilmert. “And I can’t wait for the years ahead of me.”
