Women’s Hoops Heads South For Rio Grande Rivalry

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – After starting the season off with a win, the University of New Mexico women’s basketball team will head down south for a mid-week Rio Grande Rivalry match-up, which will be the first of two match-ups with New Mexico State. Tipoff is set for 7:07 p.m. and will be on ESPN3.

About the Match-up: The Lobos will face New Mexico State for a midweek Rio Grande Rivalry match-up. This is the 71st meeting between the two teams and the Lobos lead the all-time series 47-23. Under head coach Yvonne Sanchez, the Lobos are 5-1 and 27-2 while Sanchez has been involved with the program. New Mexico State claimed a 70-59 win over the Lobos last season on Dec. 7, 2014. Before that loss, the Lobos won 12 straight against the Aggies.
 
The Aggies started off the season last week 1-0 with a 79-69 victory over North Dakota State. Junior Tamera William was the high scorer for the Aggies, putting up 19 points. Senior Sasha Weber was second on the team in scoring with 14 while Freshman Brooke Salas and junior Brianna Freeman were first in rebounds with eight each. The Aggies shot 38 percent from the field, 25 percent from 3-point range and 75 percent from the free throw line.
 
The Lobos are coming off a 1-0 start to the 2015-16 season after claiming a 65-57 win over Houston Baptist Friday. The Lobos started out with an energetic first half but maintained their scoring just enough to get the win in the second half. The Lobos were led by freshman Jaisa Nunn, who came off the bench to score 11 points and collected eight rebounds.

About the Coaches: Yvonne Sanchez enters her fifth season as head coach of the Lobos. This will be her 16th year with the program. Sanchez holds a 61-66 record as head coach and is currently 1-0 on the season. She is 5-1 against the Aggies and 27-2 since she came to New Mexico. Before New Mexico, Sanchez was an assistant at New Mexico State from 1993-99.

Mark Trakh is in his fifth season at the helm of the New Mexico State women’s basketball program. He owns a 55-68 record at New Mexico State and is currently 1-0 in the 2015-16 season after a 79-69 victory over North Dakota State last Friday.

Rio Grande Rivalry: The Rio Grande Rivalry is a series between the University of New Mexico and New Mexico State that encompasses sports for both programs. The Rio Grande Rivalry officially started and was recognized beginning in the 2007-08 academic year. We currently lead 10.5-3 on the scoreboard.
