**GAME INFORMATION & PARKING: For fans coming out to WisePies Arena to support the Lobos, the university will not be clearing out The Pit in between games. Fans attending the men’s game will be able to stay for the women’s game afterwards, but will need to move if occupying a season ticket holder’s seat. Fans coming for the women’s basketball game will be allowed to enter the men’s game at 7 p.m.
UNM will rope off 150 parking spots in the Stadium West lot for women’s basketball parking pass holders. UNM will also be providing a shuttle service from the Stadium East lot for anyone else wanting to attend the women’s game, if they cannot find a spot in their respective lot.
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – The University of New Mexico women’s basketball team will open the 2015-16 season with Houston Baptist Friday evening. The game will be televised on ROOT Sports which will feature the Lobo men’s game with Texas Southern at 5:35 p.m. with the women’s game following 30 minutes after the conclusion of the men’s game.
The Lobo women’s basketball NLI show will also be featured on ROOT Sports during the 30-minute break between the men’s and women’s games. Head coach Yvonne Sanchez and Lobo radio play-by-play announcer Josh Suchon will talk about the four signees as well as preview the 2015-16 season.
Comcast viewers can find ROOT Sports on channel 261 and 841 in HD. ROOT is on channel 414 on DISH and 683 on DirectTV.
Game Day Promotions: The Lobos will be hosting a food drive as they take on Houston Baptist. Fans that donate an item will receive a $5 ticket (benches 1-25).
About The Matchup: The Lobos will face Houston Baptist in their season opener Friday. The last time the two teams met, the Lobos claimed a dominating 63-46 victory on Nov. 18, 2012 over the Huskies. The Lobos own a 2-0 all-time record over the Huskies, both contests under head coach Yvonne Sanchez. The Lobos are 2-2 in season openers under Sanchez.
Houston Baptist is coming off a 90-56 exhibition victory over Southwestern. The Huskies return six lettermen from last year’s squad including three starters. Senior guard Rachel Arthur is the highest scoring Huskie to return for the team. Last year, she averaged 11.0 points per game. The Huskies finished 15-18 overall last year with a 6-12 record in the Southland Conference. The Huskies made it to the finals in SLC tournament but fell 58-50 to Northwestern State.
New Mexico comes off two exhibition victories last week, a 78-41 win over Western New Mexico and a 80-39 win over New Mexico Highlands. Freshman Jaisa Nunn led the way with a combined 32 points and 14 rebounds.
The Coaches: Yvonne Sanchez enters her fifth season as head coach of the Lobos. This will be her 16th year with the program. Sanchez holds a 60-66 record as head coach and led the Lobos to a 21-13 overall record last season and 14-4 in MW play for a school record and Mountain West Coach of the Year honors.
The Huskies are led by third year head coach Donna Finnie. She owns a 27-35 overall career record. Last season, she led the Huskies to a 15-18 overall record and 6-12 in the Southland Conference.
