ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — University of New Mexico redshirt senior volleyball player Hannah Johnson was named to the 2015 College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Academic All-District 7 Team on Thursday.
Johnson, a setter hailing from Longview, Wash., was named to the District 7 second team, and is the first Academic All-District selection for the Lobos since Lena Skipper earned a first-team selection in 2013.
“It is a great honor for Hannah and for our program when a student athlete is recognized for their work in the classroom, as well as on the court,” UNM head coach Jeff Nelson said. “I am extremely happy for Hannah as she works very hard at everything she does and is very deserving. She has set yet another example for future Lobos to strive for. Congratulations to Hannah and to all the honorees and especially all the Mountain West honorees.”
Johnson, New Mexico’s team captain, is majoring in exercise science and owns a 3.78 GPA. She leads the Lobos in assists in 2015 with 869 and ranks second in program history, just 282 from the program record.
She tallied a season-high 62 assists vs. SMU on September 5, and ranks 92nd in the NCAA and second in the Mountain West in total assists.
She is also second on the team in digs with 233, and has produced nine assist-dig double-doubles this year, good for sixth in the MW. Additionally, she was named to the all-tournament team at all four tournaments UNM competed at in 2015, and is a two-time All-MW performer.
Academically, Johnson has earned Academic All-Mountain West honors in 2012-14 and was named MW Scholar Athlete in 2013-14.
The all-district teams are made up of eligible athletes (3.3 GPA or higher; sophomore and no first year students/transfers) from all Division I schools in Colorado, Idaho, Kansas, Montana, Nebraska, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Texas and Wyoming.
Johnson is the seventh Lobo volleyball student-athlete in program history to earn Academic All-District honors and the fifth student-athlete to do so during Nelson’s era, joining Skipper, Kelly Williamson (first team, 2010 and 2011), Jade Michaelsen (third team, 2010), and Jeanne Fairchild (second team, 2008).
Johnson is also just one of four MW student-athletes to earn an All-District selection. Boise State’s Sarah Baugh and Sierra Nobley and Wyoming’s Laura Beach were all on the District 7 second team with Johnson.
New Mexico is back in action Thursday night as they play host to Wyoming at 7 p.m. MT at Johnson Center.
