Lobo Athletics Mourns the Passing of P.A. Announcer Stu Walker
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — The University of New Mexico Athletics Department is saddened to announce the passing of Stu Walker, who has served as the public address announcer for Lobo Football and Basketball for the better part of the last 20 years. Walker passed away from cancer this afternoon.
Walker, 61, started with UNM in November of 1995 working Lobo basketball during the Dave Bliss era. He was UNM’s public address announcer for football when UNM qualified for the Insight.com Bowl in 1997. Along with Lobo Football and Lobo Basketball, Walker enjoyed serving as the public address announcer for Lobo Baseball, Lobo Men’s Soccer.
Walker also served as the public address announcer for the Albuquerque Isotopes and for the New Mexico Activities Association high school championships, got the job with UNM after winning a tryout in 1995. He was recommended to UNM by former Sports Information Director Greg Remington. He was a former Albuquerque disc jockey and also worked at Manzano High School.
“We are deeply saddened by Stu Walker’s passing,” said Vice President for Athletics Paul Krebs. “Stu was a tireless worker and loved not just the Lobos but all of Albuquerque. His voice was instantly recognized by our fans, and he will be sorely missed.”
A Celebration of Life will be held this Saturday at Isotopes Park at 9 a.m. to commemorate the life of Walker. The general public is ivited to attend. The third base gate at Isotopes Park will open at 8 a.m., and guests will be seated in the stands behind home plate.
Parking will be on-site at Isotopes Park (lots A, B and C), in the CNM parking lots or in the Science and Technology lots. Guests should plan travel accordingly with kickoff for UNM’s football game with Utah State at 1:30 p.m.
