LAS VEGAS, NV – Mixed emotions follow the conclusion of today’s round of golf as the Lobos close their fall schedule with a ninth place finish at the Las Vegas Collegiate Showdown. The Lobos finished with a three-round total score of 846 (-18), 15 strokes behind the tournament leaders.

“This was a good tournament for us,” said head coach Jill Trujillo. “Even though we didn’t finish how we wanted, I saw some great improvements.”

Dominating on their home course, UNLV finished tied for first place alongside Vanderbilt with identical team scores of 831, an astounding 33-under-par. San Diego State finished in third place with a combined score of 834 (-30). The leader in the first two rounds, San Jose State, dropped to eighth place after shooting five-over in round three, giving them an overall score of 843 (-21).

While the tournament was less than ideal, the Lobos still managed to break records. After breaking the low 36 hole total score record yesterday in round two, the New Mexico women’s golf team continued on to crush the low 54 hole total score record with their 18-under performance (281, 282, 283 = 846). The previous record of 10-under (866) was set by Trujillo’s 2009-10 Lobos at the Branch Law Firm/Dick McGuire home event.

Over the three rounds of competition, a total of 1,002 birdies were claimed on UNLV’s Boulder Creek Golf Course. Seven teams including San Diego State, Tennessee, and San Jose State had 60 birdies or more by the conclusion of play. New Mexico tallied 52 birdies throughout the tournament, with Ingrid Gutierrez and Alexandra Moisand earning 13 a piece and Manon Molle’ adding 12 more.

On the individual side, Tennessee’s Anna Newell was the medalist after shooting 18-under in the three-day tournament (68, 65, 65 = 198). Kassidy Teare of Long Beach State finished in second with a card of 68, 66, 66 = 200 (-16) and San Jose State’s My Leander dropped to third (65, 67, 70 = 202). New Mexico’s own Alexandra Moisand and Ingrid Gutierrez finished tied for 18th at seven-under (209). Manon Molle’ finished tied for 28th after shooting five-under (211).

“We’ll focus on our mental game more during the break and come back even stronger in the spring,” Trujillo insisted.

The Lobos will kick off their spring schedule on Saturday, February 13, 2016 at the Peg Barnard Invitational in Stanford, California.
