ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – University of New Mexico freshman defender Aaron Herrera has had quite a season so far for the Lobos. He has started nine games and played 875 minutes for UNM, he was called up to the U.S. U20 National Team, and now most recently Top Drawer Soccer has him rated as the best freshman defender in the country in its midseason freshmen rankings.
Herrera came in at No. 13 overall, which is bested only by seven midfielders, three forwards and two goalkeepers. He is also easily the highest-ranked freshmen from Conference USA. He assisted on Niko Hansen’s game-winning goal against Missouri State on Sept. 18 and played every minute of UNM’s first six matches of the seaon.
Patrick Khouri, who is the only freshman on the Lobos to play more minutes than Herrera, was also ranked. He was listed at No. 75 after having started all 13 games for UNM at both midfielder and right back.
The Lobos also had two players listed on Top Drawer Soccer’s national top 100 list: Chris Wehan (No. 63) and Hansen (No. 90).
UNM plays at C-USA foe Marshall Friday night at 5.
